Hello all.
I just wanted to say thank you for all the lovely comments of late. I usually drop new commenters a hello email but I haven’t done this week as I am a sick, sad sack. I’ve spent far too much time on the couch and am going a little bonkers!
Hopefully I’ll be back to normal next week. Thank you for stopping by and for the lovely, happy love notes. I love your hellos. :)
Adoring this lady and her photographs. Best lookin’ tumblr I’ve ever seen.
Astounded by this lady’s amazing renovating talent. Loving her kitchen and office makeovers.
EDIT: Adding this link as I’ve just found it and it’s the best thing I’ve seen in a while. You MUST see my lovely friend Jen‘s amazing work for Small Magazine. She just gets better and better.
Dark and Light…which do you prefer?
I love how two images of similar items can be so strikingly different. I think what is consistent is finding that light to make the image better. If I had shot the first shot in strong sunlight, it wouldn’t have had the same effect. Both were shot on overcast days, but by using 400 ISO film, I was still able to capture ok shots with the available light. I was pretty happy with the results.
I shall pronounce it here, loud and clear,
You know that feeling of guilt you get when you are eating something bad in a food court or chomping on a caramel top ice cream at the movies? That little demon in your head telling you that you shouldn’t be putting that in your mouth and that people are looking at you and thinking, “that’s why you won’t be wearing a bikini this summer”? When I eat chocolate, I don’t feel that or hear that guy. That’s how powerful my love for chocolate is.
Leaving Sydney meant I had to say goodbye to my chocolate heaven, Max Brenner- Chocolate by the Bald Man. Since moving to Vancouver, we have been on the hunt for another chocolate place of worship and we may have found it.
Thomas Haas is a legend here in Vancouver and a master pastry chef around the world. After many failed attempts, we finally got to steal a table at the very popular cafe on Broadway. The Canadian and I sampled hot chocolates and gorgeous chocolate sacher sponge and manjari cakes while our friends had drinks called London Fogs. Doesn’t a London Fog sound intriguingly delicious?
As always, I love shooting in cafes and any place that serves coffee and dessert, so I made sure that I took a few shots. After I took the last photograph above, I was informed that the man behind the counter making the coffees was Thomas Haas himself. I was so impressed by the fact that a top pastry chef was making people’s coffees and talking to the customers. He didn’t seem to mind that I took his photograph either.
If you are in town for the Olympics I do recommend grabbing a hot chocolate and a croissant at Thomas Haas. We all deserve chocolate!

And just like that, the Polaroid film is gone. I knew embarking on a Polaroid a day project would end in disaster. If you haven’t already heard my cries of woe all over Flickr and Twitter, be thankful that you don’t have to live with me to hear me whine all the more about my lack of Polaroid film.
My usual supplier who has always stocked dozens and dozens of packs since I arrived back in September, suddenly was all sold out yesterday. It was only 2 weeks ago that they seemed to have an abundance of film and now all of a sudden, it’s just all gone? What gives?
I do feel for the poor guy who was trying to explain to me how that many boxes could have been snapped up, when for months nobody seemed to touch the stuff. For I kept firing questions at him in disbelief to which he kept saying “I don’t know.” I think the real kicker was when tears started welling up in my eyes.
You see, this has happened to me before but I’ve always managed to find it elsewhere. Some beautiful souls have offered to help me out and I’ve got a couple of packs on the way from across the lands. One gorgeous lady even offered to give me some of her rapidly depleting stock. You see, it’s moments like those that make me realise how important this little art is. I knew I loved Polaroid but it wasn’t until yesterday when it seemed so final that I realised what it will be like if the impossible can’t be done.
My daily Polaroids will be back…later.
I ADORE the fact that one of the comments I got for these shots on Flickr was
“Oh Manda, this is something right out of the first few seasons of the X-files”
That comment gave me the biggest grin because I totally love that I’m living in the land of Mulder and Scully. If I only I lived here while they were shooting. I would have been such a groupie, trying to get a glimpse of dreamy Duchovny.
Vancouver certainly is a filming happy town. I notice the little fluoro coloured signs pointing Movie crews in the direction of the set all over the place. I even made Sean follow one the other day down near Jericho Beach. Sure enough, a film crew were setting up outside this gorgeous house which I concluded must have been an outside set for a scene from Fringe. We are all experts in these matters, right? I’m quite fascinated by the whole thing because of the lighting and camera set ups, not because I may catch a glimpse of a Twilight starlet.
As you can see from my photographs, the scenery and weather here certainly make for some interesting locations. These were taken along some farmland roads, one morning while the fog was still laying low in the valley. It was quite breath taking and inspired me to shoot scenes I normally wouldn’t. That’s one thing I love about photography…your ideas and inspirations change so rapidly and it allows you to grow and change. Shooting a landscape has never really interested me, but a moment like this, I couldn’t really pass up.
A little sunshine for a dreary winter weekend. I have never been so ready for summer in my life. I hope you’re enjoying it, Aussies!
These shots were taken with my Nikon FM3a film camera. I used Kodak Portra160NC (my usual sunny film of choice). The 2 square shots on the bottom right were taken with a Polaroid SLR680. Yes, that’s me and the Canadian all sun kissed and happy.
I’ve got a few exciting things to share next week. Ooh, I bet the suspense is killing you. Hell, they are exciting for me and what good is a blog if I can’t share happy moments with friends? Have a great weekend all.
