Wandering Neighbourhoods: Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach is one of those hidden little places that upon entering feels like you’ve almost stepped into somewhere completely separate from Vancouver. The ‘Welcome to Crescent Beach’ sign looks like something out of a Jaws movie and sets the tone for the quiet haven that rests ahead. Beautiful, quaint ocean houses line the streets and some are lucky enough to have the ocean as their backyard. I’ve never seen the place as busy as it has been the past few weeks with all this gorgeous weather we are having here in Vancouver.

Photographs were taken with a Yashica FX3 camera using Kodak Portra 400NC film.

Wandering Neighbourhoods: Beach Suburbs

Sydney beaches are white sand, blue waters, surfing and sun light sparkling like crystals across the ocean. We are extremely blessed to have this as our playground and the more that I am away from home, the more I realise how lucky we really are. The cliché is true.

The little sis and I spent days watching the sea and listening to the soft, crash of the waves. She and I share an adoring love of the ocean and the lifestyle that goes with it. With her olive skin and tousled locks, she fits the bill more than I do. I, on the other hand, have the fair, freckle fabulous Irish skin that runs deep in our family.

Of course, I felt it would be too clichéd to show you pictures of surfers and white sands. You can faintly make out the beach line in the black and white shot of Kelly…if you squint. These are a little taste of our beach neighbourhoods from behind the scenes.

p.s. That was a bloody good cappuccino and if you squint for a second time, you’ll see the Frankie Photo Album book in the middle of that bookshelf. I found our book in one of my favourite book stores, Berkelouw.

All photographs were shot with a Yashica FX3 camera. The first 2 shots were taken with Kodak Portra 400NC film and the remainder with Natura 1600 film from Japan.

Wandering Neighbourhoods: Paddington

Over the past few weeks I have been spending some happy soul time with my family and friends in Sydney. Kel and I have been doing some sister bonding whilst walking the streets of Sydney with cameras in hand.

Paddington is home to Sydney’s fashion strip with plenty of gorgeous designer stores and beautiful streets lined with Victorian terraces. The little sis and I wandered up and down Oxford St peering into cashmere boutiques and at walls lined with shoes. Of course, I dragged her kicking and screaming into Max Brenner (Chocolate by the Bald Man) for a little hot chocolate and a croissant.

I have plenty more Sydney photos to share soon. How has your week been?

p.s. I will be announcing the winner of my birthday giveaway tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Wandering Neighbourhoods: Suburban Magnolias

Rather than sharing a well known Vancouver area, this week I have been photographing a more suburban walk. I have been doing a lot of wandering around the streets gazing at the beautiful Springtime colours that have popped up in suburban gardens.

The cherry blossoms arrived early but right now the magnolia trees are blooming all over the place creating dotterings of pink and white. I love their floppy petals which seem to droop like bunny ears.

Finally some warm weather for this chilled to the bone Australian. Aren’t these lovely beginning days of a season just filled with joy and hope for a happy time ahead?

Wandering Neighbourhoods: Arbutus and 6th

As I make my way through my Vancouver wanderings, I am always drawn to mixes of colour. Even when the sun isn’t shining in this beautiful town, I can always find something cheery and bright to make my heart and camera sing a little sweeter.

I do find that Vancouver is full of brilliant colours, painted murals, decorated sidewalks, richly coloured houses and flowers blooming. I found the same thing in Ireland when I visited back in the late 90′s. The human spirit fighting the seasonal greyness of these wet climates, no doubt.

I fell in love with the house in the first picture when I was led down the road to its path by hoodwinking cherry blossoms. I was chasing a shot of the blossoms with the mountains behind and fell upon the most glorious little house on a hill. I’ve always loved yellow houses, little wooden, yellow houses. There is something so completely kooky about a brightly coloured house. It shouts to the heavens… hit me with cloud and rain, my spirits will not be dampened!

Do you have much colour in your home, inside and out? I can’t wait to have my own garden that I can fill with as many colours as I can. How do you bring colour into your life?

Wandering Neighbourhoods: Broadway

Wandering Neighbourhoods seems to be a recurring theme here on Mocking Bird and I quite love doing it with my camera so I think it’s going to be a regular feature.

Kitsilano is one area that I venture to quite a bit in my wanderings around town as it’s full of great restaurants and quirky shops. These shots were all taken on Broadway on a lazy Sunday afternoon walk with my Sean.

Taste testing coffee places, savouring the fresh bread smells wofting through the air and accidently focusing on your love and not the store front you were trying to, make for happy weekend strolls.

Have you been on any photo walks of late?

p.s. I think I subconsciously focused on him and not the globe. =D

Photographed with a manual Yashica FX3 camera and Fuji Pro400H film.

More wanderings around the downtown neighbourhoods in search of cafes and hidden stores that will become my regulars. It’s an odd thing to be faced with so many choices and possibilities of new habits and rituals that may become part of my life in months to come. I’m in a limbo of waiting right now until we find our perfect new home. I wander neighbourhoods with eyes wide open and we drive through suburbs late at night where I peer at lowly lit houses.

It’s all so new and different and possible.

Linkage:

  • A few new prints and notecard sets available in my print store.
  • I just started  myself  on this new china with the tea cup set. I cannot wait to start adding to it! ~ A lovely thing about moving your life overseas is that you get to start all over again with decorating and buying lovely housey things.
  • I heart Elizabeth Messina. I have hearted her for a long time. She shoots weddings like no other.
  • Have you heard that Pia is writing another book? Amsterdam Made By Hand is coming. I’m so excited!
  • Speaking of awesome ladies who write books, Jen has one coming out very soon. I have ordered mine and cannot wait!
