Marrakech Has My Heart

When the opportunity arose for me to teach an instant photography workshop in Morocco, I was of course thrilled and excited, but there was a part of me that was a little apprehensive about going to Africa on my own. Travel and exploration is deep rooted within my heart and is the reason I’m a photographer. I love to explore and discover new things, so getting the chance to shoot, teach and travel in a vibrant place like Marrakech was a dream come true. But there was a part of me that was unsure of what to expect, and I wasn’t even sure it would be somewhere I would even like.

My first few days in Marrakech were an explosion. I had never set foot in a place so loud, so chaotic and so very, very vibrant. I was on sensory overload and at first glance, I wasn’t sure Marrakech and I would get along. My first morning, I awoke to the sounds of distant chanting- a sound to which my jetlagged mind wasn’t able to decipher. It wasn’t until a chance moment on a rooftop terrace overlooking the medina, that my heart was captured. The sun was blanketing the pink brick of Djemaa el Fna when voices called out from speakers across the entire square. It felt as though the calls were coming from every corner of the city all echoing in on top of one another. The girls and I stood there sinking it all in as the sun went down across the Atlas Mountains knowing that we were experiencing something special. It was a moment I will never forget for the rest of my life.

Marrakech hits you hard at first and then slowly draws you in…the people, the light, the architecture, the call and the absolute contrast of it all. There has never been a place that has existed like it in my life. Morocco has crept into my soul and I’m happy for it to stay there for the rest of my days.

There are lots more Polaroids, instant and film photos to come!

Morocco Beckons

This week I will be taking off for one of my biggest adventures of 2012. Come Sunday morning, I will hopefully be sitting somewhere delightful with the Instant Love team ready to take on Marrakech and our instant photography workshop. It seems hard to imagine that I will be in Africa in just a few short days. I have no idea what is ahead of me and I cannot contain the glee I feel about the amazing things I am going to get to shoot. Not to mention that I am going to get to meet some wonderful people.

This workshop is only the beginning of our Instant Love adventure as we have got lots of things planned already for the year ahead- one being a book launch hopefully somewhere in North America in Spring.

Mocking Bird may be a little quiet in the next few weeks while I take this show on the road however you know I will be back with plenty of photos to share- film, digital and of course, Polaroids! I’m sure you will see plenty of updates from all three of us from the road on twitter and facebook!

Speaking of facebook, Instant Love now has a facebook page. Come ‘like’ us over there! We’d love the support.

Have you been to Morocco? Photographer’s paradise, yes?

Instant Love: How To Make Magic and Memories with Polaroids

What do you do when you have a post all lined up for the first one of the year and then your first book arrives on your doorstep? You ditch that post, snap a Polaroid with the only colour film you have (expired beyond expired) and do a happy dance.

Friends, yesterday, Susannah, Jen and I got the most lovely surprise in the mail- for our baby of the last year and half arrived in actual book form. Our lovely editor Bridget sent us the first copies of our Polaroid book and I can’t even express how many emotions ran through my body as I flipped through its pages. We have been dreaming of this day for a long time now and to finally have it here is rather surreal.

From the moment you start hatching ideas to the day you get to hold it in your hands is such a journey of; emotions, hard work, long nights, excitement, freak outs, re writes, fun, editing (and editing again and again), bonding and looking to the future. It’s hard to even put into words the feelings I’m now having to see my writing and photography in published form. Up until this moment, it never really seemed real.

I want to thank our editor Bridget and Chronicle Books for believing in us, our designer Brooke for making it all look so beautiful, but mostly I want to thank my co-authors Jenifer and Susannah, my pola sisters who I love so dearly.

Instant Love will be bursting from the shelves in bookstores from May/June or you can pre order it now on Amazon.

Here’s a sneak peek!

Pretty Polaroid Notes Give Away

Hello everyone,

I am so excited to share a little of our Pretty Polaroid Notes with you today. It’s been such a joy to work with Chronicle Books on the production of our note cards and our book, Instant Love. The past year and half of shooting and writing the book and compiling our images for the note cards has been such a blissful time in my life and I am so gracious that I have been given the opportunity to present my photography and writing with the world. I still find it hard to believe that I have a book coming out and feel very humbled when I see my Polaroids staring back at me from a shelf in a book store.

To say thank you for all your support and love on this journey, I am giving away a pack of Pretty Polaroid Notes to one lovely reader. Just leave a comment below to enter the give away. I will draw the winner next week.

And if you would like to pick up a box yourself, you can find them here and here. They’d make great stocking stuffers!

p.s. If you spot our Pretty Polaroid Notes in stores, I would love to hear about where they are in the world! I’ve spotted them in one store here in Vancouver so far. =D

……………

This give away is now closed. Check back on Thursday for the winner announcement.

A Little Update

It seems that I have taken part in Susannah’s August Break…and taken it far too literally.

Shoot By Design is moving along so wonderfully. We are in our 4th week and I’m loving the interaction I’m having with my students. They are doing amazing work and we are all really growing together. It’s been a great experience so far and I’m so pleased that I decided to run it. I’ve decided I’ll definitely be running it again and am currently planning out some new courses for the future.

Pretty Polaroid Notes should be appearing in stores now and friends are telling me that boxes are being delivered to homes across the land. It makes me so happy. This shot is one of the images used in the note card set. I took it so long ago and have been waiting to share it. I can’t wait for the book to be done so I can share all the other images that have been kept secret. Speaking of the book, Instant Love is going to the printers next week and we have been looking at possible covers.

It’s feeling very real at the moment!

Instant Love: A Polaroid Retreat in Marrakesh

Where would you like to be next Valentine’s Day?

How does a Polaroid retreat with Jen Altman, Susannah Conway and me at the lavish Peacock Pavilions in Marrakesh, Morocco sound? In the past couple of months, (along with the help of Maryam from Peacock Pavilions) the girls and I have planned a gorgeous retreat filled with Polaroid workshops, travel, food and wonderful people and we hope you can join us!

We’ve put together an extensive brochure for you to download and hope you’ll be as excited about it as we are. Peacock Pavilions is a dream escape and we know the opportunities for taking instant photos will be amazing. Peacock Pavilions is a boutique hotel and all rooms are reserved for retreat participants only. The accommodation facilities are double rooms to be shared by retreat participants. It’s going to be a great experience of sharing, learning, fun, adventure and friend making.

Marrakesh is such a gorgeous landscape and the colours and textures in the Moroccan souks are perfect for Polaroid cameras!

Because the retreat lasts for a week, you will have plenty of time to spend chatting with all three of us and we can’t wait to meet our guests! The spaces are very limited so get in fast. All the information you need is in the brochure, so please make your way to Instant-Love.com for the download.
