Wonder

December 4: How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year?

It may seem hokey but I try to cultivate a sense of wonder in my life and the people’s lives around me every day. It’s what this blog is about. On the surface it may seem sweet and full of saccharinity to the Nth degree but when you seriously look at the world, our lives are tough. Most of us spend our time battling with problems and hearing about the far greater problems of those in need around the world. Life in its everyday normalcy is a freakin hard mess yet despite all that, finding a sense of wonder in the everyday is sometimes the only thing that may keep us going.

The simple things in life that can bring you out of your world of problems for a moment and give you that little stroke of happiness are why we live our lives. Simple things like late night giggles, stringing fairy lights across the mantel, baking double chocolate chip cookies and reading magazines and inspirational blogs are the pick me ups that create wonder in our everyday lives.

We all do these simple things to feel the joy for moments in our otherwise difficult days. I could tell you that 2010 has been pretty rough for me but rather than bore you with that, I will say that my sense of wonder is packed to the brim with Christmas sparkles and the smell of cinnamon. Christmas will not live up to my usual high expectations this year and I’m OK with that because despite it all, I’m still creating that world that has been mine every December for the past 34 years -the same December that my mother created for us as kids.

Creating a sense of wonder in my life and the lives of my loved ones is my whole aim in this world. I don’t care if that seems corny and overly sentimental. It’s who I am and I’ll likely never change.

What’s In Your Kit? with Jen Causey

Jennifer Causey is a Brooklyn based photographer who shoots weddings, kids, food and lifestyle. Well known for her love of breakfasts, Jen keeps us salivating over eggs and bagels on her blog, Simply Breakfast. I think Jen somes up her work with the titles of her blogs. Her work is simply beautiful. You can really get a sense of her character and passions through her photographic style. In my opinion, being able to do that makes for a brilliant photographer. Jen’s style seems effortless and natural, always classic and full of grace. I love that her love of the simple life is so apparent in her work.

Jennifer’s photography has been featured in publications such as Applique Your Way for Chronicle Books, Lines and Shapes’ most recent Brooklyn Diary, Real Simple and Edible Manhattan. You can have your own little piece of Jen’s world with her book, Simply Paris. I asked her about her equipment choices for the latest What’s In Your Kit? feature. Thank you, Jen!

MB: What are your cameras of choice and why?

Jen: I recently purchased a Canon 5d mark II, so I have been shooting with that a lot. I also like to shoot film with my Mamiya 645 and my Nikon 35mm 8008. I wish I had a Leica M6.

MB: Which are your favourite lenses to work with and why?

Jen: My favorite lens is a 50mm 1.4 for the Canon and a 90mm for the Mamiya. I also sometimes use a 35mm, 85mm, and I have a 24-105 zoom.

MB: What equipment do you prefer to use to shoot portraits?

Jen: For portraits, I usually use the zoom to get a variety of focal lengths or the 85mm.

MB: Name a camera that you just love to have fun with.

Jen: I love the Diana and the Holga. You never know what you are going to get, which makes it a wonderful surprise when you get magic.

MB: What do you carry your equipment in?

Jen: If I am carrying a lot, I use a rolling suitcase, otherwise my purse for on the go/everyday shooting.  I also have a Tenba bag when I am just carrying a few items.

MB: Is there one piece of equipment that you would recommend to a newbie shooter?

Jen: Any type of SLR, film if possible (set to manual), then move over to digital. I think learning the basics on film is important to learn and see the magic that is photography.

Thanks so much for joining us at Mocking Bird today, Jennifer! Check out more of Jen’s beautiful work at her website, blog and flickr.

You Have A Passion, Use It

So I’m getting on my tough girl, big sister pants and taking a running jump up onto the soap box here today. Being this far away from home means that I cannot do my duties as a big sister as I should care to do them.

Note: This post is directed at someone near and dear to my heart, but if you’re needing a kick in the butt today too, read on.

1. Never let anyone tell you that your dream is too far from reach.

2. Never let the bitterness of others influence your decisions to have the life you want.

3. Never allow the insecurities of others creep into your mind to let them overtake your own.

4. Never forget your dreams.

5. Never believe that one person, no matter how convincing they may be, has all the answers.

6. Never forget how lucky you are to have a passion- lots of people never find theirs.

7. Always know that what scares you is usually what will make you better.

8. Always remember what makes you happy.

Got it?!

Fall Roid Week 2010

Have you been enjoying Roid Week? There have been some amazing Polaroids in the pool this week and I have found myself some new contacts to follow which is always a bonus of Roid Week. My polas were a mixed bag, using Polaroid 600 film and Polaroid Artistic TZ film. There are a few more over at Flickr and I may even throw up another one before the day is done.

I’d love to see some of your Polaroids and instant pictures from the week. Leave a link to a favourite Polaroid from your stream in the comments and I will share some of them here next week!

Bedrooms on Film

A little bedroom fantasy for you today. These photographs were taken by talented, creative people. Please click through to visit their flickr pages linked below.

I wanted to share some of my favourite bedroom pictures from flickr. I love these because they aren’t shots you’d see in a magazine, they aren’t over styled with perfectly fluffed pillows… they are serene and calm and real rooms lived in by real people. To me that is far more beautiful than any catalogue shot.

They are inspiring me to go shoot all the bedrooms I can find…that and wanting to curl up and take a nap. Inspiring me to work and sleep, that’s pretty impressive!

Decor Week at Mocking Bird

The tumbleweeds were blowing through  little ole Mocking Bird last week! I hate seeing the blog sitting without any newness, so to make up for it I’m devoting this week to something fun and inspiring. So much of what I love about living the simple life is having a beautiful, happy place to come home to. I’ve really found such solace in my home in the past few weeks and am working hard at making it a heavenly haven filled with all our happy things.

I’m devoting this week to all things housey, decor and design. We have a giveaway happening tomorrow and lots of inspiring posts for the week.

I’m kicking it off with the bane of my current existence- my teeny rental kitchen. Luckily for me, a clever lady has offered to help me with prettying it up and we are working on that at the moment. Renting is definitely a challenge, especially when your last rental had a brand new kitchen with granite counter tops. Have I mentioned that I hate the counter tops? They are pink…PINK!

Do you have one room in your home that compels you to take to it with a sledge hammer? Thankfully there are no sledge hammers laying about, so in the meanwhile I’m dreaming of kitchens with white cupboards and open shelving, wooden chopping block counter tops, a large wooden island and dozens of drawers to fill with our kitchen gadgets. Here are some of my dream kitchens…

Such beautiful rooms to come home to. I hope to take some elements of these beautiful kitchens and infuse them into my teeny rental. Do you love your kitchen?

p.s. Come back tomorrow for the homey give away!

From Overload To Creation

Recently I wrote about Inspiration Overload and it made for a lot of conversation in the comments, which I LOVE. It’s so satisfying to see a post turn into a conversation here on Mocking Bird. For those of you that do comment, thank you so much. For those quieter ones that read, come out and say hi sometime. I’d love to “meet” you.

So that post…a lot of readers were feeling the same way about having inspiration overload. Of course, I’m now going to do a complete 360 as I want to talk about the ways in which we are inspired.

Last week I went to see Arcade Fire and was blown away by their awesomeness again. As the cerulean-blue-frocked Regine spun her glittery ribbons around the stage, I was imagining pictures in my head. Little images and ideas appeared in my mind as the music was beating straight through to my heart. Images flashing on the video walls, snow appearing to fall across the stage, the lyrics running like wildfire…all these things strike up the harps of inspiration within my head. Even at 34, I still get pangs of wanting to be a rockstar for those few euphoric moments of madness that happen at rock shows.

My inspiration comes from the books I read, the artists whose lives I imagine, the moments I have in my head during xylophone chimes, watching people’s footsteps on the street march in time with the music on my radio and the flashes of summer childhood memories that pop in and out of every day conversations.

Inspiration can come from so many different places. It’s about being switched on to that place in your head that allows your imagination to wander, being aware of the little pictures that you and only you can create.

I think to be inspired is one thing. To take that inspiration and turn it into something beautiful is quite something else. That’s my new aim. Won’t you join me?

p.s. Check out my guest post for Margaret over at Paper Pastries. I take you on a visual tale of my 2 cities.

Amsterdam Made By Hand

When the gorgeous Pia Jane Bijkerk told me she was sending me a copy of her book, I had no idea that I would get such joy out of the package that it was delivered in. Gold wrapping decorated with burgundy Japanese Washi tape…one of the beautiful handmade boats from her Amsterdam window display…a sweet note from Pia tucked inside… and beautiful real French lace tying it all together.

Pieces of her handmade world sewn together to make me smile.

You can imagine how delighted I was to receive such a beautiful gift.

The book is just as fabulous as its predecessor and is filled with gorgeous, milky photography all shot by Pia. In my quest for the simple life, I adore finding real artisans, people who work hard and pour love into their art. Amsterdam Made By Hand is filled to the brim with these such people.

Pia Jane has made an art out of taking us on tours of the beautiful stores in the beautiful cities of Europe. The words on the pages transport you there…as though riding a bicycle with her through the cobblestoned streets of Amsterdam.

In her introduction, Pia describes a dream she had about a magical place filled with artists and designers crafting away in beautiful back alleys. To imagine that her dream town does exist is kind of intoxicating. Intoxicating enough to make me want to hop a plane to Amsterdam today. The beauty is in the way the book is written. Pia wants you to take your time, to wander…it is only through the wander, that magic discoveries appear and Amsterdam Made By Hand is all about discovery. I know that when I do take my first trip to Amsterdam, I will be tucking this gorgeous little book into my suitcase. Who needs a travel guide, when you’ve got a Pia Made By Hand book?

Pia, Amsterdam Made By Hand is most definitely inspiring me to want to visit your beautiful town. I can’t wait for the day that I get to experience both Paris and Amsterdam your way.

Have you got your own copy to love and behold? And…aren’t I the luckiest?
