New Beginnings

Drum roll please….Congratulations to Sarah T who is the winner of the spot in Irene Nam’s Simple Soulful Photography Workshop. You have been emailed Sarah! Thanks to everyone for entering and for all the comments.

I hope you are enjoying this holiday time. I am feeling that thing I feel every year at this time…possibilities, change, new beginnings. Do you feel it too? Now I just need to decide what I’m going to do about it.

Where We Blog From

So this week I am a very lucky lady as the gorgeous Jane from Ill Seen, Ill Said has featured me on her popular Where We Blog From column. I was so thrilled when Jane asked me to share some photographs of my little blogging space. I really love taking a peek into people’s homes as I think it gives you even more of a sense of the type of person they are. There is only so much one can share via writing on a blog or with art of some kind, so these kinds of real deal snippets of reality are right up my alley.

Where We Blog From is such a fun feature and I have been following it religiously since I first discovered the fabulous Ill Seen, Ill Said. So yes, it is quite the honour to have been asked and I was happy to share a little bit of my world with her readers. Hello, hello Ill Seen Ill Said readers if you’re new to Mocking Bird! It’s lovely to have you here. Pop on over to Jane’s blog to see where I blog from!

If you follow me on twitter, you’ll see that I post ( I can’t use the word tweet, I just can’t) about these kinds of things as they happen. I’m a little slower to blog about them, so follow me on twitter if you want the goss as it goes to press!

Words To Shoot By also went live with a great group of Polaroid photography this week. I feel so blessed to be a part of such a great photography collaboration. The work is so wonderful this week!

Gypsy Girls and Sailors

The lovely Alex of Gypsy Girl’s Guide is about to become a mumma and in her planning and absence from the blog, she has asked some wonderful people to do some guest posting. I am very honoured to have a guest post of mine at Gypsy Girl’s Guide. I wrote about my experiences as a person living abroad. We’d love to see some responses over there, so check it out.

And no, I do not condone taking Polaroids of sailors’ behinds. I do not condone such a thing, even if you are living abroad… and are visiting a foreign country… and can escape back to the motherland before being dragged aboard a ship to scrub decks as punishment. Never, ever!

Mocking Bird 1st Birthday

Even though I’ve been blogging for many years, today marks the first birthday of this here blog!

I could never have imagined that Mocking Bird would have brought me so many wonderful interactions with new friends and offered me new opportunities like it has. To celebrate this mini milestone, I would like to share some pressies with you for supporting me on this little journey.

I am giving away one of my Cherry Blossom Polaroid prints (shown above), a set of note cards and another little surprise. If you would like to receive a little thank you package, leave a comment below and I will choose someone from the list of comments.

This 6″ x 6″ print is a lustre matte, bordered print made from an original Polaroid which was taken with a vintage Polaroid SX70 camera. The image itself is 6″ x 6″ however with the border it is 8″ x 8″ inches in size.

I am offering this now, however I won’t be able to post it out until I get back to Vancouver in about 10 days. I’ll leave the comments open until the weekend. :)

Thank you so much for all the wonderful comments, emails and conversations. You lovelies are the best!

Amanda xx

Artful Blogging Summer 2010

I have a list. A list of 100 or so things that I would like to achieve at some point in my life. Do you write those kinds of lists?

One of my hopes on my list was to have some of my photography published in a magazine. This month, that little dream has come true, as an article I wrote about Mocking Bird is in the gorgeous magazine, Artful Blogging.

I was honoured to be asked to share a little bit of my blogging life with the Artful Blogging readers and am thrilled to have a 6 page spread. I’m actually yet to see a copy as it went on sale a day or so after I left for Sydney, so hopefully it will be waiting for me upon my return to Canada.

You can read all about how I approach blogging and what decisions I’ve made to make Mocking Bird what it is. The Artful Blogging Summer 2010 issue is in book stores now.

*********

I also wanted to say a huge thank you for all the amazing responses to the Creative Soul mates post. It seems that many of us feel the same way about it. I want to individually respond to each comment when I can. Unfortunately, my time is very limited at the moment as my grandfather is extremely ill.

I don’t believe in apologising for absences on blogs but if the posts do seem a little sporadic, that is why. Thanks for understanding. Have a great day and go hug a family member.

Some Very Exciting News

Hello from sunny Sydney!

My little adventure back home has begun with lots of family hugs and stories from the past 7 months. I worried that coming home after such a long absence would feel strange and that things would have changed. Some things are different, many have remained the same but it’s nice to sit down to dinner with my family and have things as they always were. I’m heading out for some quality sister time today and hopefully will return with some Polaroid magic.

In the midst of my packing and leaving for the airport, some very exciting news was announced. If you follow me on twitter, you may have already heard our big announcement.

Over the past 6 months, some very talented and gorgeous ladies and I have been madly planning something big. Something that is a dream come true for me, something that I’m still quite shocked about, something that I think you might like.

Jenifer Altman, Susannah Conway and I have been offered a book deal with Chronicle Books and I couldn’t be happier! We put together a proposal for a ‘How To’ book on Polaroids. Chronicle came back to us with an offer and we have accepted. The book is looking at a release date of Spring 2012, so it’s a while off yet but it’s super exciting and something that I am very passionate about. I know that it is going to be something really special and I cannot wait to share more of our journey with you.

Polaroid shooting here I come!

Interviewed on Shutter Sisters

What a lovely way to wake up; sleepy Sunday morning, sunshine and an interview on Shutter Sisters.

The lovely Irene interviewed me for the Shutter Sisters six questions. She asked me all sorts of questions about my photography and life as a photographer. You can read it here. Thanks so much, Irene!

Speaking of photography (when don’t I?), there has been an arrival of more Springtime goodness in the print store. Check out these blossoming beauties and this magnolia above. I’d love to send you out a pretty, Springtime package. I can also do those prints as 5 x 7. Send me an email or etsy conversation if you’re interested.

I hope you’re all having an enjoyable Sunday. I had a 30th last night and am having dinner at one awesome chef’s house tonight followed by the Spoon gig. How has your weekend been?
