In the past 6 months, I’ve worked hard at my first online photography e course, Shoot By Design: Refining Your Photography Style and I have realised that what started out as me wanting to share some of my knowledge and find a process to have a more in-depth way to answer some of those email questions that I get…has actually turned into something that I absolutely love to do. I love the interaction and one to one (even if it is across a computer screen) involvement I have with my beautiful students. It has taught me so much already and I’ve made connections with new people, that I never thought possible.
So..in the last few months, I’ve been shaping ways to keep this moving upwards and I know I have lots of other types of courses in me. Shoot By Design was the first of two courses that I had initially dreamed of. The second is a film based course for beginners. You, me, some film cameras and weeks of learning and growing together. I would teach you and include;
- all I know about the basics of shooting with 35mm film cameras
- film types
- compositional elements
- lighting
- how I shoot and what I do to get my photos looking the way they do
- projects/assignments to keep you busy
- instruction and personal feedback from me
- and an interactive forum and flickr group to keep you interacting with new friends and peers.
What do you think? Would that be something you’d be interested in? I want to hear some feedback from readers, past students, twitter followers and facebook friends. I’ve toyed with the ideas of an e-book but I know that I won’t be able to share as much as I could with a course. It would be offered in 2012 (dates are not finalised as of yet) for between 4-5 weeks. I’m still figuring things out.
Are there any subjects related to shooting film that you have a burning desire to learn more about? Please let me know as I tweak the topics and lessons. Onwards to building and growing in 2012!

Oh this sounds great! I’m already enjoying the Shoot by Design right now, and a film one would be awesome. I was just thinking how I didn’t want our course to end soon, lol.
Count me in!
I don’t want it to end either!
As a recent convert to film photography I would love to participant in a class dedicated to the subject.
Thanks for your feedback, Brandi. :)
Shoot By Design helped me realised film is what I love the most- you know you could sign me up for this in a shot :)
ha! thanks for the feedback, Mary :)

Hey Bonnie! I am thank you. How are you? xo
That sounds wonderful, I would love to learn more about lenses and which ones to use when, I’m learning by practice at the moment.
Thanks for that feedback, Amy. That’s great.
I would LOVE to participate in this, I have a film camera on the way and 5 rolls of splendid 400H sitting here ready for me to play and I honestly have NO clue where to begin with film, so this is PERFECT for me :)
Ooh 400H is a gorgeous film. Thanks for the comment, Hayley.
I love this idea! Can we talk about Polaroid film as well?
I’m thinking it will mostly be about 35mm film at this stage but I will cover Polaroid a little. I don’t want to conflict with our book and Pola workshops coming up. Thanks for the question, Lydia. :)
love the idea… in fact I’d love to run a Spoonful challenge for your students perhaps?

What does that entail, Thea?
Coun’t me in – I just bought a new lens and another 10 rolls of film arrived this morning so I’m ready to go!
Your film photos are already so gorgeous, Helen! You have more film than me right now. I need to restock!
I would love to take a class! I need to learn how to take better photographs.
Thanks for your feedback, Elisha :)
A film course sounds perfect Amanda, I would definitely be interested!
Yes please it’s always good to learn about photography!
yes please, it’s always great to learn more about photography
You are such a gem. This inspires me so much to want to share (what limited) knowledge I have with others. AS I have previously written about—beginners are truly where it is at—they are such an inspiration.

This sounds fabulous! I have the cameras and the passion (and the film) but what I find need most of all is the incentive to get out there and use it all. Assignments and group activities would be perfect, plus I know I still have lots to learn.
I would love a class like this, Amanda, as I am just playing with a 35mm film camera. I would love to learn more about how to use the ISO to change the film/photo look even though the film you are using is set to a specific ISO. I would love to learn about different types of film and the “looks” they give (trying to find film that isn’t so crisp and clear—want more vintage-y look to my photos). So excited.
I agree: a film course sounds great! I loved reading your feedback during Shoot By Design (The first class!) and reading the feedback you gave to other students. I feel like an e-course, rather than an e-book, really plays to your strengths as a photographer and as a teacher.
I would love it Amanda! I enjoyed shoot by design so much and it would be great to have a course focused on film since I am trying to practice more with it and you are an awesome teacher! so keep us posted
Gorgeous colour Amanda!
