Two of my favourite neighbourhoods in Sydney are Surry Hills and Paddington. I’ve shared a little of pretty Paddington with you before on the blog but I couldn’t help myself when I was there again. Paddington is mostly known for its shopping strip on Oxford St which is always super busy on the weekends but I prefer to wander the narrow, winding back streets and look at the Victorian terraces. I think if I could choose any type of home to live in, in Sydney, it would be a Victorian terrace. I always imagine myself having breakfast on the front balcony with tea and a croissant.
I ventured to Surry Hills for one primary reason. The stellar Bourke St Bakery. I arrived at around 11.30 on a weekday morning and there was a line out the door. I love the fact that all the people lined up were men. Cafe going always seems like such a girly thing to me, so this pleased me. The coffee was oh so fabulous and I wanted to sample everything! I could have easily shot there all day. Since I left Sydney, they have opened bakeries all over the city…time for you to go global, Bourke St Bakery. Now to pick up their book...
What do you think of Surry Hills and Paddington? Could you find yourself happy on those balconies too?

The terraces are certainly beautiful. I agree that a balcony is such a nice place for breakfast, and reading, too. And the pastries and coffee look delicious!
Yes, Bourke St Bakery is a delicious, sinful place. ;)
Oh I LOVE me a good neighborhood/local spot post! Especially having just done one myself—I find it such a charming coincidence that you posted a boulangerie and I posted a french cafe. Yay us!
ooh, I’m off to check out your latest post now, Jasmine. We are kindred spirits. :)
I always enjoy your “through the window” shots (1st diptych).
Thanks Rachel! They’re my homage to Sofia Coppola ;)
Oh, goodness, yes! This is my ideal place, PERIOD! I love this style. I often feel ashamed at the way we live now and wish pretty much every town, neighborhood, etc. still looked like this. The vintage posters, the architecture. My taste is late about fifty years, but I would never have it any other way.
I’m very similar Sarah and prefer the old vs the new. Things were built better back then. The charm and care that way taken in building things is far more my ideal than modern and cheap.
Thank you for sharing ur pics with us! I wish I had the chance to visit these neighborhoods in Sydney a few months back. I’ve heard many good things about Paddington, but perhaps I’ll get a chance to check it out on a few future visit down under! I do miss Australia:) Wow, these Victorian terrace homes are lovely! I’m with ya, I wouldn’t mind hanging out on the front balcony with some tea! -A
I lived in Surry Hills for a bit when I was backpacking Oz, it is amazing for a wander- this makes me want to go back (if only for some Bourke St Bakery yumness!!- I keep sending that cookbook home as presents for people haha!)
These look like gems to visit. Wonderful, wonderful shots.
Looks like lovely neighbourhoods, I would love to visit them some day.
