His & Hers: A Photography Collaboration

Roid Week is over for another year but the Pola love continues with all the new photographer discoveries. One such discovery I made is the very talented duo known as His & Hers. Over the course of Roid Week, each day I was enraptured by the gorgeous his and hers portraits appearing in the pool. His and Hers, otherwise known as Dave and Whitney are not strangers to me. I have been following their gorgeous photography separately for quite some time now. So it was a thrill to see that this beautiful couple are now collaborating for the His & Hers project. I asked them both a few questions about their process…

MB: Why did you decide to collaborate on this project?

Hers: We met on Flickr, so having a photographic collaboration together seemed like the natural thing to do. Plus, it gives us an excuse to take more photos.
His: And who doesn’t like taking more photos?!
Hers: It was actually his idea – he suggested it early on in our relationship, we just couldn’t settle on a name.
His: It just kind of happened on its own. She took a great Polaroid on a camping trip and I matched it with one of my own.
Hers: When we put them side by side it was just like… this is it: His&Hers
.

MB: Are you intending on collaborating on more or was this just something special for ‘Roid Week?

His: I think ‘Roid Week helped get it going. We both really love Polaroids after all.
Hers: It was really fun and something we look forward to continuing.

MB: Do you both discuss the ideas and concepts or is it more fluid and they just come to you whilst out shooting?

His: We have lots of ideas and bounce them off one another whenever they come to us.
Hers: Yeah, like in bed at 3 in the morning.
His: Well for example, she wanted to do the reflection shots in the puddle, but we couldn’t find a good location…
Her: …but we happened upon a good spot while we were out one day and got it. A lot of our shots happen that way.
His: Yeah, we’ll be out and one of us will say “Oh! Hey stand over there… blah blah blah.”
Hers: Or “What do you think about this?!” Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.
His: Yeah, like learning about how glitter and Polaroids don’t mix.
Hers: I really wanted that to work. I’m still bummed.

MB: If you do continue your collaboration, will it be strictly Polaroid or shall we see a branching out of his and hers awesomeness?

Hers: We already have lots of ideas we are throwing around and actually took several shots this afternoon.
His: I think it’ll be fun to play with different mediums and techniques. So we’ll definitely be trying more things. The trick is not to force it. The more fun we have the better the photos.

Thanks so much for interviewing us, Amanda!

Thank you so much, Dave and Whitney. It is a pleasure having your beautiful work featured here on Mocking Bird.

You can see the His & Hers flickrstream here and check out both Dave’s and Whitney’s streams on flickr. They both also contribute along with me at Words To Shoot By. The theme this week was Polaroid, of course! Check it out here.

  3. Hi Amanda, thanks so much for this post. I have been watching Whitney’s work for some time now. I think this idea of theirs is wonderful. I just love all of their photos.

  4. Dani, I totally agree. The concept is perfect and I love that these were mirror images.

Whitnee, it’s tough when someone else comes up with an awesome idea that you’d like to claim as your own isn’t it? How dare they?! LOL

    Andrea, totally.

Jackie, people with a love for Polaroid make a perfect match, don’t ya think?

    Thanks for commenting, Cindy!

  5. This really is awesome! Every couple who shares an interest in photography will be thinking ‘why didn’t we think of doing that?’ …love the parallels.
