Not As It Is

Oh how my photography has changed. When I first really got into photography, I could never understand why anyone would take photographs of flowers. “How boring!” I would think to myself.

Now I take so many photographs of flowers that it’s getting to be ridiculous. Flowers are pretty, sure, but it’s not really the flowers themselves that I like shooting. It’s the colours and textures I can make and the way the bokeh looks all swirly that compels me to shoot them.

I really love it when pictures of everyday things like flowers turn out to be more like paintings of pink cauliflowers huddled in a corner. That’s far more interesting, right?

Tomorrow I will be back to share some of my first Sydney Polaroids, including one of my little muse.

  1. there is another world in flowers – i’ve been surprised before by comments that flower pictures are my best shots….i sort of rebel for a moment and then i think, hey go with a strength right?

  2. Just found your site — lovely !! (and perfect “timing” somehow too, as I used to think flowers etc are boring but am starting to get into macro photography)

  3. When I was a little girl, I’d steal my mum’s point and shoot and take pictures of flowers all afternoon, only to have none of them in focus (because it was just a crappy kodak point & shoot). When I first got my DSLR I macro’ed the crap out of flowers and took some really beautiful stuff that I’m proud of. Quite the contrary, amanda, flowers are one of my favorite things to lurk in your photostream :)

P.S. I did my first real post over the blog! Thanks so much for inspiring, lady!

  4. Hannah, it’s kind of addictive.

Charlane, yes about the other world. If you enjoy it, then why not! :)

    Thanks for stopping by, Lauren!

Amanda, yes I think getting a camera that allowed me to shoot macro is what first inspired it. Hooray!

    Fer! Thank you, gorgeous. xx

  5. Agreed and agreed. Color and texture and light, Oh My! :)

Flowers are scientifically proven to brighten a persons spirits. We are biologically built to have an emotional reaction to them. Cool, right? Plus, the camera loves ‘em. And we might as well take advantage of Spring while it’s here.

    Power to the flower!

p.s. I shot some flowers today too :)

  6. Oh, I can’t help myself. I love flowers, and I love photos of flowers! My photography isn’t that awesome in and of itself.. so I guess I figure I can photograph whatever the heck I feel like photographing. It’s only for me, anyhow. Well, and I can’t help photographing any lotus flower I see. I don’t see many!
