Vinyl Magic
by Amanda on February 23, 2010
Back in the day a lot of my blogging was centred around music and concert photography as I used to shoot lots of bands on weekends. Most of the time I was just shooting for fun as I would go to many gigs with the Canadian. I really enjoyed shooting bands but after a while grew tired of it, for one reason or another, and stopped.
Lately my Sean has been buying a lot of vinyl as he is back with his collection which he had to leave in Vancouver. We all have iPods and music on our computers but I really love looking at the artwork. There is something to be said for flipping through a record collection, feeling the artwork between your fingers and being able to slide the crisp covers out of the stack. Looking through CDs just isn’t the same. I actually think CDs should be banished from our homes. Their tacky plastic covers have no place in beautifully decorated rooms.
Sean holds one of my favourite songs from 2009 in this photograph above but I chose this album because of its striking cover. I am often inspired by my favourite music, but many times I’m inspired by the artwork and photography on record covers so I’d like to share some of my favourites with you.
Goldfrapp’s Seventh Tree (1, 8 & 11), U2′s No Line On The Horizon, Sigur Ros’ Hoppípolla single, Arcade Fire’s Funeral, Florence and the Machine’s Lungs, Asobi Seksu’s Hush, Fleet Foxes’ Fleet Foxes, Bat For Lashes album promo shots.
I have long been in love with the artwork within Seventh Tree’s limited edition and often dream of finding a sun drenched field to shoot a girl with golden curls. Just need to find the girl.
I’d love to hear about any album artwork that you find beautiful!
First photograph containing Bat For Lashes ‘Daniel’ by me.
All other album photographs found on google images.

album artwork can be so inspiring!
i love the covers for lykke li’s youth novels , headless heroes’ the silence of love and the long blonde’s giddy stratospheres to name a few off the top of my head.
bat for lashes album art is always awesome as well.
How have I only now discovered your blog? LOVE!
I really love the first photo! And there’s nothing like the real thing, I feel the same way about books. No e-books can ever take away the way I feel when I hold a real book in my hands.
And I love Bat for Lashes! :)
My own favourite is the cover of the album ” The Silence of Love” by Headless Heroes. The artist is Irina Douer, her work is beautiful.

so loving your posts of late! sorry i don’t have something more interesting to add to your album cover beauty, but just wanted to stop in to say I have not missed a post this year – I’m here rain, hail or shine (right now it’s snowing outside). px

Silence of Love is getting lots of love.
Aww Pia, thank you dear. That means a lot to me. Our Vancouver Olympic sunshine is now gone, rain is back!

that golden curled clown is stunnning
anything natasha khan does is gold in my eyes
i will always love joni mitchell’s ‘song to a seagull’
love the ‘art’ of our music! when i win the lotto and get to all that wall space in a home i want to fill i will use some album cover art for some wall somewhere! some make me tilt my head to one side (jerry harrison – casual gods), some make me LAUGH (very best of ashford and simpson) and most just spark nostalgia. i was just talking in depth about vinyl with someone today…funny.
oh how i love bat for lashes, daniel is a beautiful song. i didn’t know it was available on vinyl!
my favorite would be Washington’s cover off their EP How To Tame Lions (best song by the way!)
Pearl xo
It was a cowgirl mind trick, Nik ;)
Love this post Amanda!
I basically ONLY buy albums on vinyl for the big artwork. I love Arcade Fire’s Funeral, both Bat For Lashes albums, Fleet Foxes, Neko Case’s Middle Cyclone, all Sufjan albums and many more. My collection is ever growing.

Lovely pictures!
I’m a fan now :)
<3!
I love looking at album art! What a great idea, posting about it. One of my favourite artists, Sarah Slean, has several albums out where she actually drew all the cover art. I also have a very old Rita Coolidge record that has the most beautiful, whimsical cover.
stunning imagery and photography. I see you are a fellow unraveller :)

I miss record albums so much. One of the best parts of buying a new album for me was sitting and looking at the photos and reading all the liner notes. I would sit and examine every inch while I listened to the music. Sometimes they would have posters or a separate booklet with lyrics. I wish they still made album covers and just stuck the CD inside. One of my all-time favorite album covers is the Beatles ‘Abbey Road’. I still have every one of my records albums dating back to 1969!
We have similar musical taste, i love all this records and artist!!!
Incredible photo Work….Congrratulations!
