Community Gardens

by Amanda on October 7, 2009

We don’t have many community gardens in Sydney. There was actually one in Glebe where I used to live, but it was in a backyard of a building and kind of shut off from the world. Here in Vancouver, I have discovered the most gorgeous little garden downtown (yes, I have to say “downtown” and not “the city”) lining the streets alongside an old, abandoned railroad track.

The Canadian and I were walking down the street towards 4th Ave to do a little shopping, when I glanced upon a little boy skipping along the train track. It was the most beautiful sight and I couldn’t believe this slice of heaven was tucked away behind some buildings.

I am sure many of you have them in your local areas, but I hadn’t really known about them before and was pretty excited to find that anyone can book a piece of the garden to tend to for a year. It’s something I’d like to try if we end up living in that area.

Do you have community gardens where you live and have you used them before?

We have a community garden where I live, but it’s really not beautiful :( I’d like one with cherry blossoms!

  2. Oh yes, the one in Kits is lovely. There’s a nice, big, new one in my neighbourhood on Davie at Burrard :)

I’ll have to check that one out too, Amanda.
Malin, you should take part and add a tree. :)

hi amanda, i was sent here by pia, and what a lovely discovery! you take beautiful photos – my heart skipped several beats when i scrolled down the page. the hydrangea shot is gorgeous…

  5. Found my way here via Pia’s blog… Your photos are so dreamy… just beautiful.

We have a community garden in our neighborhood – but the weather here is very hot and humid and as a result, the bugs (especially mosquitoes) are brutal. I must confess have a hard time keeping our own little garden out back in any sort of shape over the summer months, so I haven’t been brave enough to ever venture into community gardens. I think they’re a great idea, though… Turning a little patch of earth, working next to your neighbors, and turning it into a beautiful, edible oasis… I don’t know what could be more lovely.
