Life Unsettled? Get Shopping

by Amanda on September 30, 2009

I‘ve discovered the secret to feeling unsettled and unsure of oneself. Shopping. I’ve known shopping was a cure for many things before but never had I realised how comforting it can be when your life is unsettled and upside down. I’m enjoying the newness of my life in Vancouver, but shopping is helping with the feelings of rootlessness.

My 2 new favourite stores are Aritzia and Plen+y. I have known of Aritzia for a long while but Plen+y is new to me and full of fabulous clothing to keep me excited for a while.

Aritzia have this awesome program where they feature different photographers’ work on their storebags. I was excited to discover that the gorgeous shots gracing my store bag were by one of my flickr contacts, yyellowbird! Read more about her on their blog.

Excited by shopping..sad, but true.

I’m headed to Broadway and 4th next week to check out the funky, independent stores.

Check out more of yyellowbird’s gorgeous photography at her blog.

p.s. I’m participating in Susannah Conway’s Unravelling course over the next month. I’m so excited and can’t wait to get stuck into it. Click the Unraveller link in the sidebar to find out more about her courses.

p.p.s Just got myself a new scanner, so film + polaroids and I are back in business! Woo!

I have a very deep understanding of this. What do you think I did for months in France when I didn’t have anywhere else to be or anyone to talk to? J’ai fait du leche-vitrine.

Oh wow! I adore that shopping bag! I was immediately drawn to the image, and was totally surprised to discover it was a shopping bag. Love. It. And totally jealous. =)

Oh I’m glad you get it nikki.its good to know others go through the same stuff. X x

  4. If you’re looking for really unique, locally designed labels and independent stores, head to Main Street, anywhere between Broadway and 30th :)

Manda, two things: is Pola 600 film any use to you? ($18 US for 10 shots and $28 for 20 or something like that).

And two: what are you doing tomorrow afternoon at 3:00? come over to my house and bring a camera :)

    xxoo

Hi Amanda! I’m sorry I haven’t stopped by in a while. It’s been busy around here. I love this post and am glad to hear you’re settling in nicely. We still need to meet in Seattle soon. :)

I was just going to suggest heading to Main Street but I see someone already has! Specific places to check out are: Welcome Home Eugene Choo, Umeboshi, Twigg & Hottie, Front & Co. and Smoking Lily (all beside or across from each other at Main & 19th-ish) and then go to Liberty Bakery on the corner for a yummy sweet treat.

Best of luck with your settling in and with your shopping. And I second Amanda Nicole’s comment about main street for great shopping. The whole street is pretty much filled with either local independent clothing designers stores, fabulous vintage consignment stores and more restaurants and cafe’s then you can shake a stick at. I live just off Main and it’s such a fabulous artsy community.

Call me a very long time, but occasional lurker, but I see you’ve moved from Australia to Canada now, which I find to be quite interesting in relation my own move from the U.S. to Canada (Toronto) a little less than a year ago! I hope you like it up here. I’ll admit that I get these moments here and there where I wish I were back home (especially if I want to buy something that’s either not here or is considerably more expensive…heh), but, all-in-all, it’s an interesting place to be. Best of luck!

Yeah I’m thrilled someone finally found Cari’s work. I think she got the news last winter but in my opinion they did not pay her enough! I’m guilty of stopping someone last spring in a huge mall so I could take a photo of my first Cari-Aritzia bag, haha. Poor girl didn’t speak English that well either.
