Its OK To Have A Girl Crush

Come on, admit it, we all have them! I remember as a Year Seven student looking up to the Year Eleven and Twelve girls and thinking how “cool” they were. At the age of 33, I still get them, usually on celebrities who I ironically kinda wish I could be when I grow up. Its actually very sweet and almost kind of powerful that we as women can openly admit that other women are fabulous. I love the fact that we can celebrate other women and not have to be embarrassed about it. Men don’t really get to do that, unless the guy they are crushing on is a super famous sports star or rock star.

So today, I am listing  a couple of the fabulous “celebrity types” who are the crushees of my crushing.

Kate Winslet

In my eyes, she can do no wrong. Brilliant actress, down to earth, sends herself up on Ricky Gervais awesomeness and is absolute stunning without being overly perfect.

Sofia Coppola

Director of many of my favourite films, fashionista, awesome taste in music, director of gorgeous Frenchyness and she loves cameras.

Cate Blanchett

Cate is another amazing actress who is down to earth and has amazing style. I am lucky enough to be seeing her live on stage in A Streetcar Named Desire for the Sydney Theatre Company in a few weeks!

All these women have style, are graceful and seem like they would be humble about their talents and they have some kick arse photographers shooting them.

  1. These are my girl crushes too! They’re all talented, strong women, who are never smeared in the kitchy tabloids. I am soooo envious that you get to see Ms. Blanchett live! Wow!

  2. Wow! We have insanely similar taste in our ‘girl-crushes!’ I’m going to have to agree with you on all of these, and I would add Drew Barrymore to my list, as well. It’s funny, my girlfriends and I were just talking last night about how amazing Kate is…she really is a divine human being!

  3. sofia coppola is definately one of my top girl crushes (lost in translation is one of my all-time favourite films) and i would probably add kirsten dunst for her kooky fashion sense and scarlett johansson for all-round fabulousness.

  4. I definitely have to agree about the two Kates :-) I have yet to see any Sofia films though, maybe I should because I’ve heard great things about them.

  5. Great post! I like Kate W too and Drew and kirsten mentioned by Kate and tara above me.
I just did a post on Alexa Chung as a girl crush as her style is unique and again she’s v much her own person-not conforming to any stereotypes.
I also like Sienna Miller she’s v down to earth and funny too
Freida Pinto from Slumdog Millionaire is another favourite actress – she not only looks stunning but I think she has a really kind hearted nature- she is dating her co star Dev Patel from the film and theyske such a cute couple! Kat

  6. I’m so happy I stumbled across your site. I love it! I also love Sydney to pieces, so I can get my Oz fix from you. :)

I have girl crushes on Shakira and Beyonce! Your crushes ain’t bad either. ;-)

  7. fabulous picks! in addition to all three of yours, i would have to say keri russell and zooey deschanel top my list! keri is such a natural beauty, and zooey is so cute I can hardly stand it! ;o)

  8. Amanda, we are super lucky. I will be crossing my fingers that we don’t get the understudy.
Susannah, I’ve only seen her in a few things…got any movie recommendations?
Hallie, yes, she is a stunner.
Tara, I do love Drew but I pretend not to because people always tell me I look like her. I don’t think we do but I get it constantly.
Kate, Scarlett or as my Sean calls her, Scarjo is gorgeous!
Carol, oh my, you must! I’d see them in chronological order…start with Virgin Suicides, it’s very whimsical and pretty, depressing and wonderful. Then one of the greatest movies of all time, Lost in Translation! Suntory time!
Kat, Alexa Chung seems to have just sprung from nowhere! She’s everywhere…I don’t know much about her.

Oh Andi, thank you so much. :)
Katrina, Amelie would actually be at the top of my list too then. =D
Kitty, if I hadn’t been so tired when I posted, I would have added Zooey too.
Dottie, I don’t think she has done a lot lately. I can’t say I love her but she is in a lot of movies I love lol

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I love this little community of commenters I keep seeing coming back to my blog. I do notice that you come back, so thank you! xxx

  9. amanda
i came back to see what everyone else had said and saw your message..Alexa has been around for a fair while here in the Uk, she was a model for a time, and then on T4 a youth show introducing programmes like Friends on Sat/sunday mornings. She’s been loved for her style here for a few years and lately has become more known through working on MTV in States, among other things she’s friends with Henry Holland the fashion designer and goes out with a guy Alex Turner from The artic monkeys
    kat x

  10. Oh yes, and like Kitty said, Zooey Deschanel! Her look convinced me to dye my naturally blond hair dark a few years ago, even though my skin’s very pale. I was no Zooey, but I liked it. :)

  11. oh, i definately second zooey deschanel. i love her style, and her music with she&him is divine. and alexa chung has been all over the press for aaages in the uk now. she has a great, quirky tomboy style.

my fictional girl crush has to be serena van der woodsen :-)

and yes, you must watch lost in translation carol! it is one of my all-time favourite films, i cry everytime i see it, it is so moving to me on a personal level.

  12. All the ladies you mentioned are great and I also like the ctress from The Mummy (Rachel something) and the leading lady from Enchanted, Amy Adams. O.k., one more…..Julia Benoche from Chocolat.

Can we mention a few guy crushes, too? Johnny Dep (sigh, drool) and singer Garth Brooks. What can I say? I like them a little wild (Johnny) and a little country (Garth). :)

  13. Emma Watson.
    Rachel McAdams.
    The other people listed, yes…
But I’m a little young for the others… after all, I only started regularly going to movies in about 2006…
    haha. :)

But I do agree with Alexa Chung.
    loveee myself some good mtv.

  14. too many girl crushes to mention…Jenny Lewis, Zooey Deschanel, Bat For Lashes…

but number one will always be PJ Harvey..my eternal inspiration

Major girl crush on Emily Haines (of Metric) at the moment too.

I have to agree with you on Cate Blanchett! She’s stunning in real life too….I was at an opening night of a play at STC last week, and Cate sat in our row, mere seats away..took alot of effort on my part to stay cool :) ….plus she’s a bit of a superwoman too (with all she does) which is always inspiring!
