I Heart Film

by Amanda on July 16, 2009

I heart film so much that I started a whole blog about it.

I love that some of these photos were taken a while ago and I had forgotten about them…

  1. i know exactly what you mean. it somehow makes the whole process and the resulting image feel more special. I don’t know whether it is the antisipation or just that it all takes a little bit more effort to do? But i love film too! x

That’s so true, Caroline. It does feel special.

I couldn’t agree more. I find something so much more gratifying about pressing the shutter button of a manual film camera than I do a DSLR or even an auto film SLR. I also like that film has made me be a little more economical about my choices of subjects. And while I like negative film, I adore getting slides back. Each one (even the terrible ones) is like a little work of art in their own frame already.

Katie is a favorite film photographer of mine who is a rising flickr star.

Hello Amanda. The debate between film and digital is a never ending one for me since I find them sooo complementary. It took me a lot of time to go into digital, mainly because I wanted to be sure that I’d find a quality level that would satisfy me, and when I did, I fell in love with all the possibilities. Now, concerning film, I’ve entirely switched to medium format (120 format) which results I love love love. But it is “slow photography”. It works well when I have no preconceived idea and I’m in no rush to see the result. The discovery is always so exciting. Whereas digital is great for practising a lot without fearing of wasting film, for experimentation, and for projects on which I’m impatient in some way. As for inspiration, I’m always looking at the classics of old times (Lartigue, Willy Ronis, …), and at blogs like yours which are far ahead of me for discovering new talents ;o)

David, I haven’t shot slide film in such a long time. I should again.
I checked out Katie’s stream and yes, her work is gorgeous. So rich!

Catherine, yeah I don’t really even see the point in debating about it anymore. I use both mediums, both have a place. I just really hope that digital doesn’t destroy film completely. That’s what concerns me most.

Lol, Amanda! Your mom sounds alot like me. ;) One time I told my husband, quote “I can’t believe someone would name a movie Dolby Stereo” when we drove by a movie sign. Sigh…..I give my family alot to laugh about. hee, hee.

I’m going to follow you on Twitter. My life’s pretty boring, too, and I’m on Twitter. (Also, a huge Lost fan.)
