Cafe

by Amanda on July 14, 2009

Holidays for me mean cafes, lingering in the sun, walking, exploring and taking pictures. One thing I am definitely going to miss about Sydney is the cafe culture. I am sure there are plenty of cafes in Vancouver and I have been to a few, but I get the impression that the culture isn’t as big as it is here.

All of these shots were taken in my local cafes in Glebe, the first two being at The Clipper Cafe. The light in there is magnificent and a feast for coffee drinking photographers like myself.

Here is a little taste of the past few days in Mandaland.

  1. Gorgeous photos! There is a cafe culture here in Vancouver, it’s just a tad different. There are many, MANY Starbucks’ around, but also lots of one-offs nestled in. We love our coffee!

Oh good, Amanda Nicole. I will have to hunt them down.
LOL yeah I know all about the Starbucks.
I love Starbucks too but it’s nice when places are interesting and a little off beat.

  3. [...] out my personal blog, Mocking Bird to see some (shhh digital!) shots from my life as a coffee drinking cafe [...]

It’s 7:10am, I’m just up (my children let me sleep in… YAY!), and just like yesterday morning you’ve got me jonesin’ for a cup o’ joe. You’re such a tease, Amanda.

  5. amanda says:

but they are the same pics, Sarah!

  6. The photos are gorgeous! Are they all digital? Some of them look like film. I can’t seem to make my digitals looks beautiful

what lovely photos! you are very talented. i just love sitting in small cafes with friends. it is one of my favorite ways to spend a free day. your blog is so inspiring. thank you so much for visiting my blog.

  8. amanda says:

Sundari, yes these are all digital. Most of the shots on here are usually film, but I used my 40D for these.

    Lauren, thank you!

You’re movin’ to Canada??! Whoo hoo! I’m a Canuck living in the U.S. and although I do like my life down here, I often miss Home. Vancouver certainly will have lots of cafes and coffee shops. And it’s such a friendly province with lots of social activities. You are going to make new friends, you are going to have FUN living there. I recommend taking the ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island in the late afternoon, around dusk. It’s heavenly. I still dream about that trip. Sigh…

PS: Have you visited Maddie of http://www.persistingstars.blogspot.com? She’s a poetic soul, a photographer, and a friend of mine who lives near Vancouver. You two should meet. :)

  11. amanda says:

Susanna, I am a little worried about the friend part but I know I am going to enjoy living there.
I have been to Vancouver on 4 separate trips now but never been over to Victoria and that’s no. 1 on my list!

I think Maddie links to my blog, I will have to check hers out again. :)
    Thanks for commenting.

i second susanna’s suggestion to take the ferry across at dusk – can you believe i actually miss taking that ferry?! its such a long trip, but playing crib, dining on a burger and fries, and perusing the crappy souvenir shop are things i miss. along with the amazing sunset, the incredible expanse of ocean and snow capped mountains, and watching out for diving sea life.

You ARE an artist, Amanda! These photos are so beautiful. I really like the cupcake one. ;)

  14. How exciting, I lived in Vancouver for a year and a half and I love it there. I think there is a cafe culture in some parts of the city – I remember these crazy Canadians sitting outside in shorts in January!

coffee is huge in vancouver. it’s a city full of coffee nerds who like to do cuppings and roastings and then talk about it for hours! on the plus side, most of them are foodies and beer drinkers too, so there is something for everyone.
starbucks is horrible. their coffee is horrible (i may not be a nerd, but i am a snob : ) and with so many very good independant coffee shops around there are far better options.

    ferry rides are indeed awesome.

and you are going to have a wonderful time living here.

  16. amanda says:

Oh that makes me feel much better.
I will have to make sure we find a place near the cafes. We have gotten very used to our Inner West weekend breakfasts hehe
